Fortnite has recently been released on the Switch and had two million downloads in the first 24 hours alone. However, the big story with this version involves a cross-play issue that has many fans up in arms.
Fortnite launched its Switch port just three days ago, and allows cross-platform play between iOS, Mac, PC, and Xbox One. Noticeably missing from that list is PlayStation 4, and that’s because of a very aggravating limitation. Players who have registered their Epic account on the PS4 are unable to log into the Switch version, and vice versa. The issue also exists between the Xbox One and PS4, but the Switch’s portability makes the PS4/Switch problem more notable among players. No such issue exists between the Xbox One and Switch. The only known workaround is to create a new account for the other platform, effectively starting over on the other platform with a blank slate.
In an interview with BBC, a Sony representative said:
We’re always open to hearing what the PlayStation community is interested in to enhance their gaming experience. With more than 80 million monthly active users on PlayStation Network, we’ve built a huge community of gamers who can play together on Fortnite and all online titles. We also offer Fortnite cross-play support with PC, Mac, iOS, and Android devices, expanding the opportunity for Fortnite fans on PS4 to play with even more gamers on other platforms. We have nothing further to add beyond this at this point.
In the past, Sony has blocked cross-play with games such as Minecraft and Rocket League. This particular instance, combined with the lack of acknowledgement of an issue in Sony’s official statement, could make this one a particularly troubling issue. Despite their platform’s slogan being “this is for the players,” Sony’s anti-cross-play stance could be seen as a move that’s against the players.
