Sony is expanding the Spider-Man universe, this time with the anti-hero Morbius the Living Vampire slated to be performed by Jared Leto who is also slated to return as the Joker in another standalone movie. Morbius was created in 1971 by writer Roy Thomas and artist Gil Kane. His first appearance occurred in The Amazing Spider-Man issue 101, the first issue not written by Stan Lee and had a run of over 30 issues ending in 1995.
Morbius is a scientist that suffers from a rare blood disease. When the doctor attempts to cure himself, things go very awry. He transforms into a vampire-like monster with fangs, blood cravings, and enhanced strength. Morbius, disgusted by his transformation and blood-lust decides to prey upon criminals or those he deems unworthy to satiate his hunger.
The script is to be written by Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless, writers of the Lost in Space reboot. The film will be directed by Daniel Espinosa from movie Safe House fame. No date has been set to begin production. However, it is expected to start sometime this year.
