The newest chapter in the Subnautica survival games has entered Early Access. Subnautica: Below Zero has players returning to the ocean planet 4546B to explore its more frigid regions.
An icy welcome
Subnautica: Below Zero takes place a year after the events of the first game. Players will find themselves in a new, arctic part of the planet 4546B after a disaster on an alien research station. The new section of the planet features the original game’s underwater exploration, but there’s also surface exploration as well. Players will be exploring frigid mountains along with underwater canyons.
There’s also a whole slew of new wildlife. Most of it looks pretty fearsome and dangerous, but there’s also the alien penguins seen above. They’re strangely adorable.
We also get to see our protagonist riding on one of the game’s new vehicles. It looks like some kind of futuristic hoverbike. Various supplies will be dropped off by the space station above, but you’ll still have to go out for the majority of your resources. Having some vehicles for that’ll definitely be useful.
Unknown Worlds Entertainment estimate that Subnautica: Below Zero will be in Early Access for about a year. The current version has a couple of hours worth of story and multiple environments. Along with the obligatory Early Access bugs.
Subnautica: Below Zero is currently available on Steam, Discord, and the Epic Games Store for $19.99. Unknown Worlds Entertainment hopes to bring the game to Xbox One’s Game Preview program prior to launch. Should everything go according to plan, the game will release on PC, Xbox One, and PS4.
