“House Flipping” is a term for when someone buys a run-down house, refurbishes it, and sells it for profit. Steam’s newest top seller, House Flipper, is a game that takes that concept and makes it into a surprisingly enjoyable video game.
HGTV: The video game
House Flipper is a first-person game that has you playing as a one-man renovation team who takes on various jobs over email. These jobs include basic things like cleaning up houses, remodeling rooms, adding furniture, and installing radiators. After a few jobs, you can buy houses in-game to fix them up, redecorate them, and sell them for profit. As the game goes on, you can also upgrade your remodeling skills and make cost/benefit decisions about your business spending. You might expect some sort of twist, but that’s all there is, and it’s surprisingly meditative.
The game is reminiscent of another first-person cleaning game called Viscera Cleanup Detail. That game had you as a sci-fi janitor cleaning up various sci-fi horror events. While that game was more humorous and tongue-in-cheek (including a Christmas level where you cleaned up Santa’s Workshop after Santa went on a killing spree), House Flipper seems much more sincere. The cleaning missions even give you realistic and relatable stories. One family wants you to clean a newly bought house and set up a room for their soon-to-be-born daughter. Another has you cleaning up and replacing radiators after a bitter ex-boyfriend trashes his former girlfriend’s house.
One of the biggest reasons House Flipper is so satisfying is how it makes the player feel a sense of productivity – something you get playing games at https://casinoenligne-francais.net/tropezia-palace/, but it’s the whole different type of online activity. Some houses can be pretty nasty, with roaches to spray and stains that may or may not be poop. The cleaning may seem slow, but over time it feels relaxing and you get a sense of pride over the virtual home you flipped. It’s also a lot easier than real renovation!
House Flipper can be purchased on Steam for $19.99
