Is Warner Brothers planning a spin-off film based on Jared Leto’s Joker? Rumor has it that they are, with the film possibly going into production in 2019.
Of course, this isn’t the first bit of Joker-related gossip to come out of the DC Universe. Following the character’s appearance in Suicide Squad in 2016, several new films were rumored to be in the works, including both a Harley Quinn spin-off and one highlighting the lunatic love story between the Joker and Harley.
This latest news, however, has the Joker as the main focus of a stand-alone film. Jared Leto will return to the screen as the Clown Prince of Crime. He’ll also be the Executive Producer. According to Variety, Warner Brothers intends to use the movie as an opportunity to expand on the Suicide Squad universe and make it possible to launch other related projects.
Suicide Squad grossed $745 million during its run in theaters, making it a success even if Leto’s scenes were largely omitted in the film—something that drew heavy criticism from viewers. It is possible, though, this may have been done on purpose. Fans and critics alike have noted that Leto’s appearance in the film was more like a cameo. This could point to the possibility that Warner Brothers meant to do a solo Joker film all along. Leto himself has stated that he’d love to play the Joker again in the future, possibly even in a starring role.
