Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles is Getting Remastered

Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles, the action-RPG spin-off for the Nintendo Gamecube, is releasing a remastered version. Titled Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles Remastered, the game will be releasing in Japan next year on the Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4.

Crystal clear.

Yesterday, the official Final Fantasy Twitter made this announcement:

Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles was first released on the Nintendo Gamecube in 2003/2004. In the game, the players are members of a caravan that goes on an annual quest to replenish their village’s crystal with myrrh. This gives the crystal another year to protect the village from a mysterious lethal miasma that covers the world. The caravan has a crystal chalice that holds the myrrh and protects from the miasma as they travel. The players can be one of four races:

  • Clavat, a balanced race that resemble basic humans.
  • Lilty, baby-faced warriors with red, leafy hair.
  • Yuke, a mysterious race that always wear face-concealing helmets and are powerful spellcasters.
  • Selkie, humans with oddly colored hair that are the fastest of the races.

The original game is somewhat infamous for the large amount of peripheral devices to play with the max of four players. Each player would require a Game Boy Advance, which acted as an individual screen for them, and a Gamecube-to-GBA connection wire. It was also possible to play single player. The lone player wouldn’t need a GBA and they’d have a Moogle who would carry the chalice for them.

There aren’t many details so far, but Remastered will have global multiplayer. Given the new technology the game will be on, the game will likely have an easier time setting up multiplayer sessions.

Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles Remastered is releasing in Japan sometime in 2019 for the Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4. No word yet on an international release, but the English in the Twitter trailer is a good sign.
