Red Dead Online Revealed

Today, Rockstar Games announced that Red Dead Redemption 2 will be receiving an online multiplayer mode. It will be similar to GTA V‘s current online mode.

New Game, New Mode

GTA V‘s online mode is arguably one of Rockstar’s biggest successes. For five years they have been releasing new in-game content regularly. These include story missions as well as upgrades to clothing, weapons, and vehicles. Last December, it sold over 85 million copies. With so many players still playing it, it’s no wonder they would want to bring this success over to another one of their beloved series, Red Dead Redemption.

In a not-so-shocking move, Rockstar announced today that they will be releasing Red Dead Online a month after Red Dead Redemption 2. It will be free to play for those who own the base game, and it will be “set against the backdrop of Red Dead Redemption 2’s enormous open world.” Rockstar has stated that the initial release of RDO will be treated as their open beta and they ask that players keep this in consideration. On their Facebook page, they stated:

Red Dead Online is an evolution of the classic multiplayer experience in the original Red Dead Redemption, blending narrative with competitive and cooperative gameplay in fun new ways. Using the gameplay of the upcoming Red Dead Redemption 2 as a foundation, Red Dead Online will be ready to be explored alone or with friends, and will also feature constant updates and adjustments to grow and evolve this experience for all players.

Red Dead Online is planned for launch in November 2018, initially as a public beta, with more news to come soon. As with most online experiences of this size and scale, there will inevitably be some turbulence at launch. We look forward to working with our amazing and dedicated community to share ideas, help us fix teething problems and work with us to develop Red Dead Online into something really fun and innovative.

No other details were released about RDO but, hopefully, they have taken what they’ve learned from GTA Online and applied it to RDO. Although now GTAO is a huge success, it didn’t start out well for Rockstar. Hackers and bugs were a huge problem for them, but over the years they seem to have ironed out most of the issues.

Red Dead Redemption 2 will be available on October 26, 2018, for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
