Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald brings War, Reunions, and… Nagini?

It’s safe to say no one saw this coming. The final trailer for Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, made its debut this morning, and featured one or two surprises that fans are sure to be shocked by,

The highly-anticipated next chapter in Newt Scamander’s journey is almost here, and as such, Warner Brothers have released one final trailer before the film releases next month.

This trailer reveals, among other things, the return of the mythical Mirror of Erised, which was last seen properly at the very beginning of this magical world, in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. The Mirror allows one to see his fondest desires, and in the trailer, Dumbledore looks into it to see none other than Johnny Depp’s titular antagonist. This may come as a shock to those less-informed about this universe, but any hardcore Potterhead knows that Albus Dumbledore harbored feelings for Grindelwald up until his fabled duel with Grindelwald.

Also among the big reveals is the return of Nagini, who fans might know as Voldemort’s pet snake and final intentional Horcrux. However, when she appears in the trailer, she isn’t very snake-like. J.K. Rowling, who helps write and produce The Crimes of Grindelwald, in classic Rowling fashion, revealed on Twitter that Nagini is what is known as a “Maledictus.” According to another tweet from Rowling, Maledictuses are females who carry a blood curse which will one day turn them into a beast.

Beyond the aforementioned shocks, the trailer contains a shot of Nicolas Flamel, the famed manufacturer of the Philosopher’s Stone (Sorcerer for us Americans), and Newt encountering, and capturing his estranged brother Theseus Scamander.

Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald is set to release on November 16, and stars Eddie Redmayne, Johnny Depp, Jude Law, Ezra Miller, Katherine Waterson, and Dan Fogler.
