Take a Comprehensive Look into the Creative Approach Behind Universal Pictures’ Upcoming Film

On the heels of their six-time Academy Award-winning La La Land, Oscar®-winning director Damien Chazelle and star Ryan Gosling reteam for Universal Pictures’ First Man, the riveting story behind the first manned mission to the moon, focusing on Neil Armstrong and the decade leading to the historic Apollo 11 flight. A visceral and intimate account told from Armstrong’s perspective, based on the book by James R. Hansen, the film from Academy Award® winning writer Josh Singer explores the triumphs and the cost—on Armstrong, his family, his colleagues and the nation itself—of one of the most dangerous missions in history.

First Man: The Annotated Screenplay is the official companion to the movie, and features a wealth of stunning photography, alongside the full shooting script.

Screenwriter Singer and author Hansen provide an in-depth commentary on the challenges of dramatizing a fact-based historical motion picture. Exclusive annotations separate those facts from the dramatic fictions the filmmakers utilized, as well as explain the overarching dramatic choices made in telling the story of the man behind the icon.

First Man – The Annotated Screenplay is presented in a beautiful hardback edition and is packed with full-colour imagery—featuring stunning production art, film stills and historical photography of the Apollo 11 crew. Along with a foreword from director Chazelle and an afterword from Armstrong’s sons, Rick and Mark, the insightful commentary from scriptwriter Singer and biographer Hansen is thoughtfully juxtaposed with the script to create a highly original artefact that will delight film buffs, historians and space enthusiasts alike.

Josh Singer is a producer and writer, known for Spotlight (2015), The Post (2017) and The West Wing (1999). He wrote the screenplay for First Man (2018).

James R. Hansen is a professor of history at Auburn University in Alabama. His book, First Man: The Life of Neil A. Armstrong, is the only authorized biography of Neil Armstrong. First Man received the American Astronautical Society’s Prize for Astronautical Literature.
