Square Enix revealed last night that all but one upcoming story DLC for Final Fantasy XV have been cancelled. This news also comes with the announcement that Hajime Tabata, the game’s director, is leaving the company.
A fantasy’s end.
Back in April, Square Enix said that there would be four DLC story chapters for the 2016 entry to the Final Fantasy series. These episodes would be called Ardyn, Araena, Luna, and Noctis, after four of the game’s characters. However, in last night’s video presentation, we learned that three of these had been cancelled. The only one that remains is Episode Ardyn, which lets player control the game’s main antagonist in a chapter set before the main game. It’ll release alongside an accompanying anime, Final Fantasy 15 Episode Ardyn – Prologue. Yuji Shinoda, the producer behind Episode Ardyn, said that despite three of the DLCs being cancelled, “…we still hope to deliver something that showcases what type of story we were aiming to deliver in some way, shape, or form”.
Here’s the trailer for the surviving DLC:
The second part of the one-two punch comes in the announcement of Hajime Tabata’s departure. Hajime resigned from Square Enix in October and plans to start his own company. This announcement also comes with a change of plans for Luminous Productions. Luminous Productions was made earlier this year from the Final Fantasy XV core team. At the time, their job was to develop AAA titles for a global market and work on DLC for FFXV. Akio Ofuji, the global brand director of Final Fantasy XV and one of the hosts on last night’s announcement, said Luminous Productions is now shifting its focus entirely onto making a new game.
Hajime didn’t show up to the announcement, but he had a written statement prepared for last night:
It’s almost going to be 2 whole years since the release of FFXV. I honestly believe the reason we were able to get this far is because of all you loyal fans. I thank you from the bottom of my heart.
Today, I have a personal announcement to make to all of you. I, Hajime Tabata, will be resigning from Luminous Productions and the Square Enix Group as of October 31, 2018.
I was able to gain so much experience with my time at Square Enix. Every title I was able to be a part of means a lot to me. However, FFXV stood out from that group as it was a special project for me which I went all-in.
Therefore, I decided to take this opportunity to officially announce my departure from FFXV to all the fans who have supported the title across the globe.
In regards to my next endeavors and near future, I have a project that I truly wish to solidify as my next challenge after FFXV. For that reason, I have decided to leave my current position and start my own business in order to achieve my goal.
As production of Episode Ardyn continues and Luminous Productions works on new projects, I felt that it was time for me to hand over the torch to the next generation group of talented and trustworthy colleagues and believe that they will create something amazing.
From this day on, I will cheer on and support Square Enix and Luminous Productions together with all you fans.
I would like to thank everyone who continue to support FFXV and those who have also supported myself personally.
