Fruits Basket, the popular and beloved anime series is set to return in 2019 with an animated reboot. Relive all the magic and heart-warming adventures of Tohru Honda and the Sohmas all over again!
Let’s Stay Together, Always!
Released in 2001, Fruits Basket is noted as one of the most influential animes ever released. Many fans, regardless of their personal tastes, tend to cite Fruits Basket as one of their first anime. Now, Funimation has announced that a reboot will be released next year, and fans are excited!
The story centers around Tohru Honda, a young Japanese girl who has fallen on hard times after the passing of her mother. She finds herself taken in by the regal and much adored Sohma family, who turn out to have a secret curse on them. If they are hugged by a member of the opposite sex, or if they get too weak, 12 members of the family from each generation turn into one of the animals from the Chinese zodiac. Here is a summary taken from the press release:
The story’s main character is high school student Tohru Honda. She begins living alone in a tent after she loses her mother, who was her only remaining family member. However, it turns out that the land she pitches her tent on is part of the distinguished Sohma family estate! When Shigure Sohma sees the value of her housekeeping skills, Tohru ends up living with Yuki Sohma, who is essentially the prince of her school, and Kyo Sohma, who regards Yuki as the enemy. But there’s something Tohru doesn’t know yet: the Sohma family has been bound for centuries by a horrible curse.
The series was based on the manga of the same name, however, the show reached its completion before the manga did which left many unanswered questions and most of the manga’s story completely unfinished. According to Funimation, the new show will follow the anime closely and fans will finally be able to watch the story unfold all the way until the end.
