MTV is bringing back everyone’s favorite claymation fighting show, Celebrity Deathmatch! Get ready to watch your favorite celebrities beat the crap out of each, again!
Let’s get it on!
The late 90s were a magical time for MTV. Instead of completely focusing on trashy reality TV like they do now, we had more wholesome shows like Daria and Beavis and Butt-head.
Just kidding, it was a raunchier time in TV history when PC culture didn’t have a choke hold on the networks– pockets. A time where we could sit back and watch our favorite celebrities beat the hell out of one another in a ring thanks to a little show called Celebrity Deathmatch.
The humor was crude, the animation was done in claymation, and it was a bloody good time. Most of the contestants on the show faced off against celebrities they were either being compared to or who had actual real-world beef with. This meant we saw the likes of Arnold Schwarzenegger fighting Sylvester Stalone, or Britney Spears facing off against Christina Aguilera. Each match usually ended up with the brutal death of one, if not both, of the contestants.
Rapper turned actor Ice Cube is set to star in the revival as well as serve as the executive producer. He had this to say:
Happy to once again be working with Viacom and MTV on a fan favorite like Celebrity Deathmatch and to continue our success together
Chris McCarthy, president of MTV, also had this to say:
We’re excited to grow our partnership with Ice Cube and Cube Vision to reimagine this fan favorite. Deathmatch was the meme before memes, remains a hot topic on social media and will be a smart, funny way to tackle the over-the-top rhetoric of today’s pop culture where it belongs – in the wrestling ring.
Nicole Richie VS Paris Hilton
He has a point. This was back before internet meme humor really hit its peak, and TV shows/Movies served as our basis for quotable humor. I can’t begin to tell you how many times someone in my middle school would mimic Mills Lane’s quote of “Let’s get it on!” It’s exciting to see it come back to the modern world where there’s so much material for them to use and many celebrities to make slaughter each other in the ring.
Mariah Carey VS Ariana Grande anyone?
Celebrity Deathmatch is only one of the latest MTV revivals that have been announced such as Daria, Aeon Flux, The Real World, Made, and Undressed. Each of these shows has been stated to be making a comeback in the very near future.
