Vampire: The Masquerade Being Developed by Modiphius Entertainment

Vampire: The Masquerade Being Developed by Modiphius Entertainment

White Wolf, the company that made the World of Darkness franchise of tabletop RPGs, is handing off development and publishing to another company. This news comes a month after the latest in a series of concerning decisions made for the 5th edition of Vampire: The Masquerade.

The end of an uneasy period?

White Wolf has been a part of Paradox Interactive since it was purchased in 2015. Since then, it’s managed to release the 5th edition of Vampire: The Masquerade, a vampire-focused tabletop RPG set in their World of Darkness universe. However, the new edition has faced problems and accusations of homophobia and neo-Nazi sympathies. This led to Paradox integrating White Wolf last month. Paradox was planning the integration since September, but the Chechnya debacle likely facilitated a faster integration.

In an announcement on the official White Wolf blog, Shams Jorjani, Paradox’s VP of business development and interim manager of White Wolf, posted an announcement:

I am delighted to inform you all that we have reached an agreement with Modiphius Entertainment to manage, publish, and guide the Vampire RPG product line going forward. As of today, Modiphius will take over the creation of new products within the Vampire: The Masquerade 5th Edition line, while White Wolf will move into a brand management role to ensure these books and games fit elegantly into the World of Darkness. We’re glad to have the Modiphius team steering V5 into the future, and full details on their new role — and new books coming soon — are available in a press release here.

This change only affects the 5th edition Vampire: The Masquerade license so far. How this will affect other World of Darkness products, including the upcoming Werewolf: The Apocalypse game, has yet to be seen.

Who is Modiphius Entertainment?

Modiphius Entertainment is a publisher based out of Fulham, London. They launched in 2013 with their first product, a Lovecraft/WWII game called Achtung! Cthulhu. They went on to make various licensed tabletop games, miniature games, and board games. Before Paradox shifted content creation to Modiphius, they handled pre-orders and distribution of the latest edition of Vampire: The Masquerade.
