Following months of speculation and leaks, Nintendo and Game Freak have finally pulled back the curtain on the next installments of the Pokémon franchise, titled.
The short video reveals the location of Sword and Shield: The Galar Region, which appears to be based off of the United Kingdom, albeit without Ireland. The direct also reveals the starter Pokémon for the games, Grookey, Scorbunny, and Sobble.
The new adventure in Galar isn’t all that was teased in this short direct. Mr. Ishihara revealed in the closing moments that Sword and Shield are not “all [fans] have to look forward to in 2019.” While it remains to be seen if this means the long-anticipated remakes of Pokémon Diamond and Pearl are also releasing this year, it certainly sounds like 2019 is the greatest year yet for fans of Pokémon.
Currently, among the many questions raised by this direct, one rings slightly louder than the rest: will longtime trainers be able to transfer their partners from Pokémon Sun and Moon to the current generation? Only time will tell.
Pokémon Sword and Shield release worldwide in late 2019, presumably around November.
