Popular gaming companies Microsoft, Nintendo, and Playstation are currently under unfriendly fire. The Competition and Markets Authority announced its investigation regarding the terms and conditions of online subscriptions. Xbox Live, PSN, and Switch Online enhances gaming experience with multiplayer options, member’s only deals, and FREE games.
Auto-renewal is available for monthly subscriptions, so gamers can worry about respawning instead of spending. But this is where the investigation comes in. Are the terms and conditions fair? How easy is it to cancel a subscription? When it comes to refunds, how long is the wait? There is also concern about whether the fine print is easily understood.
Andrea Coscelli, the CMA chief executive, said: “Rollover contracts are becoming more and more commonplace and it’s essential that they work well for customers. Our investigation will look into whether the biggest online gaming companies are being fair with their customers when they automatically renew their contracts, and whether people can easily cancel or get a refund.”
The focus of the investigation is whether consumer protection laws are being violated. The CMA has reached out to the respective companies in an attempt to better understand what they’re offering. In turn, they can make necessary – or legal – adjustments in favor of consumers.
The online gaming investigation is part of a bigger complaint. Other services being questioned are mobile contracts, broadband, and anti-virus software.
